Yeah, you play a single pickup guitar much like any other guitar. You just can't switch to a different pickup. A lot of people spend most of their time just on one pickup anyway - usually the bridge pickup, so not having a middle or neck pickup isn't always such a big deal. If you want to vary your tone on a single pickup guitar, you can try using the tone knob (if you have one) or varying where on the string or how hard you pick.

Yeah man, Steve Howe is great. I don't really rate Kurt Cobain either, but I'm the right age to remember what it was like to be a kid playing guitar when Nevermind hit. And I guess the guys who write these lists try to "cover all the bases" when they put the names together. I think they take it a bit too far, which makes for some silly results, like Cobain or the dudes from Radiohead at the expense of guys like Glenn Tipton

Have you ever heard Steve Howe? I mean, Kurt Cobain makes this list but not many many more deserving players. Come on...

Hi John,
I've already put some background to Power Chord Trainer on Josh's blog, so I won't repeat myself here.
However, I wold just like to briefly correct a couple of things:
The Power Chord Trainer is flexible, so that it is squeezed together as you move further up the fretboard. Power chords are indeed very easy in concept, but people do struggle to achieve the correct finger spacing as it is not a natural action for your left hand. Apart from initial finger spacing, a common problem is that beginners struggle to maintain this spacing as they move up and down the neck. PCT helps with this... it is difficult to explain when you haven't actually used one, but it does work! It is best used around fret 1 to 7, but can be used up to fret 12.
The use of Smoke On the Water on the website is intended to be a practice exercise using a very familiar riff. The key and inversions were chosen for this purpose... I am well aware that it is not the same as the original and it was not our intention to teach the song. I though this was clear (it is, after all, in a tab marked "Practice Exercises"!), but I will consider putting a note to that effect to avoid any future confusion.
Finally, the Power Chord Trainer doesn't claim to do anything other than assist with power chords! And, hopefully, it will provide encouragement to young guitarists who thought it was "too difficult" to hold that strange finger position. Of course it will not single-handedly turn you into a rounded musician any more than a capo, tuner or any other device (or, indeed an online teaching course) will do... it also doesn't make the tea or wash the dishes.
All the best
