Thank you for this article, it was a great help for a complete beginner like me.

I picked up my first guitar 2 weeks ago and was really at a loss at where to begin. With the price of lessons in my area I feel you really need to know the basics beforehand, and the two books I was recommended at the shop were both much too advanced for an amateur like me.

Desperate to find a more basic introduction to the guitar I stumbled upon this article and after reading it I tried out the free lessons from Jamorama, which gave me the gentle introduction I was looking for. Now I finally feel like I'm making progress and in a month or two I'll hopefully be at a place where I can go to a tutor and start working on my technique.

Keep up the good work! :o)

My son (7) is taking private lessons, and I'm teaching myself on his Epiphone SG after he goes to bed. There's two tools I've found that are excellent:

Songsterr:
Nice web (Flash) based tab site. Lots of songs, good organization.

TuxGuitar:
For Mac, Windows and Linux. Download GuitarPro tab files from http://www.ultimate-guitar.com and play along with them.

I've had private lessons before and they've been so beneficial since the instructor was someone that I could mimic and respect.

They might get a little pricey sometimes, but all good things come at a cost whether it's time or money.

Umm yes there is a difference between learning lead and rhythm, but they do tie into each other. Often lead guitar exercises are used as an easier way to introduce new concepts or techniques, but you can often then apply those ideas to rhythm playing.

Any good instruction material will help you with both skills.

You're exactly right about a teacher being able to spot mistakes that you don't know you're making! I started learning from an old Mel Bay book that I borrowed from my uncle.. it was great material. But when I finally got around to getting a lesson, my guitar teacher pointed out that i tend to hold the guitar with the headstock pointing down and tilted away from my body.. basically making everything harder than it needed to be. It took a while to correct this, I'd had a whole year's bad habit in holding the guitar wrong.. I managed to break out of the habit though, just by being mindful of how I was playing.
